Clay is a medium that has given me opportunity to delve into other cultures and times. Recently, I have been studying the Anasazi of the Southwestern United States and my current work reflects that. Their connection to the land and imagery of beliefs has intrigued me since my childhood. Specifically, the Mesa Verde black on white pottery has taught me the relationship of surface design to form.
I use clays native to the four corners region and a personal glaze recipe I have worked on to achieve the creamy white that contrasts so well with the carbon black. It has been exciting to connect with such a history of talent and learn from the Anasazi pottery tradition.
